Performance & Technology

Speed benchmarks, Core Web Vitals, and technology assessment for Red Chief

33

Mobile PageSpeed Score

Mobile Lighthouse performance of 33/100 places Red Chief last of four in its competitive set, behind Monkstory (48), Neemans (46) and Bacca Bucci (72). Desktop is also the lowest at 44/100. The two weaknesses are how long the largest homepage image takes to paint on mobile (14.7s in a cold lab test) and heavy JavaScript that keeps the page busy for 2.3s of total blocking time; layout stability is healthy at 0.016.

What This Means for Revenue

Red Chief scores 33/100 on mobile and 44/100 on desktop (Lighthouse lab data), the lowest of the four stores measured in the same session. On mobile, slow first paint and main-thread blocking are the issues: lab LCP of 14.7s, FCP of 3.2s and total blocking time of 2,274ms all land in the poor band, while cumulative layout shift (0.016) passes comfortably. The silver lining is real and worth stating: CrUX field data shows actual Chrome users experiencing LCP of 2.7s and FCP of 1.8s, so returning visitors on warm caches see a much better page than the cold lab test suggests. Interaction responsiveness is the one field metric to watch, with INP at 297ms against a 200ms threshold, consistent with the heavy lab blocking time. Slow mobile first paint is also a category-wide pattern rather than a Red Chief-only failing: Monkstory's lab LCP is 11.3s and Bacca Bucci's is 8.5s. Trimming third-party scripts and prioritising the hero image is the clearest path to leapfrog the peer set, with Bacca Bucci's zero blocking time showing what is achievable on Shopify.

Technology Stack

⚠ 4 of 6 technology areas (platform, checkout, CDN, security) are well-configured; theme customisation and payment-method transparency need attention.
Modern Platform

Platform

Shopify

Shopify-hosted storefront on the redchief-ind.myshopify.com backend, serving the custom domain redchief.in (apex; www 301-redirects to apex). Auto-scaling, PCI-DSS compliant checkout infrastructure out of the box.

Heavily Customised

Theme

redchief-ind/main-live

  • Type: Custom, GitHub-connected build on Shopify's 'Reformation' 8.1.0 schema
  • Built on Reformation 8.1.0 (theme_store_id null) but extensively modified — verified live: sticky header, off-canvas search/size-guide/cart-adjacent drawers, and a sticky Reviews/FAQ/Similar-Product section-tab bar (position: sticky, pins below the header) are all custom additions, not stock Reformation primitives.
  • Ships an unused off-canvas 'Special Offer Details' bank-offer panel (opacity:0, visibility:hidden by default) that only renders inline on the PDP as a 'View Offer' toggle — confirmed not a blocking homepage popup.
Native

Checkout & Payments

Native Shopify Checkout via Not confirmed beyond native Shopify Checkout (address step reached; payment step not submitted — no personal data entered)

  • Guest checkout: Enabled — clicking Checkout from a live cart goes straight to redchief.in/checkouts/cn/... with no forced account creation or login gate.
  • Express checkout: Not enabled — no Shop Pay, Google Pay, or UPI-intent accelerated button appears on /cart or at the top of the checkout form; only the standard multi-field checkout is offered.
  • COD confirmed available for orders under Rs. 6,000 (explicit PDP copy: 'COD Options not available on orders above Rs. 6000'); card/UPI/netbanking presumed via native Shopify gateway but not verified at the payment step.

Technology Assessment

Red Chief runs on Shopify with a heavily customised GitHub-deployed theme built on the 'Reformation' 8.1.0 schema. Checkout is confirmed native Shopify — Shopflo is present in theme settings but explicitly disabled, and GoKwik's footprint is limited to the KwikPass login widget, not a checkout override, so there is no third-party checkout-overlay risk. The main gaps are an unconfirmed express-checkout setup (no Shop Pay/UPI-intent buttons surfaced) and BNPL/EMI messaging that doesn't appear near Add to Cart despite several SKUs pricing above Rs. 6,000.

UX & Conversion Findings

Page-by-page analysis with visual comparisons against top Fashion & Apparel stores

Add one-tap Add to Cart icons to homepage product tiles so shoppers skip an extra click across all 6 featured homepage categories
Red Chief — Mobile
Red Chief — Mobile
Bacca Bucci — Mobile
Bacca Bucci — Mobile
Observations
  • The homepage category rows (Boots, Sandals, Slipper, T-Shirt, Leather Belts, Socks) and the 'Smart Styles' product row below them show only a magnifying-glass quick-view icon and a wishlist heart on each tile — no cart or '+' icon.
  • Tapping anywhere on a tile routes the shopper to the full PDP; there is no way to add a featured product to cart directly from the homepage.
  • This adds a full page load plus a second scroll-to-ATC step for every homepage-driven browse, on a page that already merchandises 6+ product categories to compete for attention.
Recommendations
  • Add a small cart or '+' icon to each homepage product tile that fires the same /cart/add.js call used on the PDP, with a toast confirmation.
  • Keep the existing quick-view and wishlist icons alongside it rather than replacing them, since both already work.
Emerging — shortens the homepage browse-to-cart path
Add colour swatches to New Arrivals collection cards so shoppers browsing the 47 New Arrivals products can see options without opening each PDP
Red Chief — Mobile
Red Chief — Mobile
Neemans — Mobile
Neemans — Mobile
Observations
  • New Arrivals cards show image, brand line, star rating (where reviewed), title, and MRP/sale price with a percentage-off badge — but no colour indicator of any kind.
  • Several Red Chief footwear styles ship in more than one colourway; a shopper has to open each PDP individually to discover this.
  • The grid holds 47 products on this collection alone, so the missing swatch multiplies into dozens of extra taps across a single browsing session.
Recommendations
  • Add small colour-circle swatches under the price on each card, sourced from the product's variant options.
  • Make the swatch clickable so hovering/tapping swaps the card's thumbnail to that colourway, matching the pattern shoppers already expect from the PDP colour selector.
Differentiator — 4/10 fashion stores show colour swatches on collection cards
Backfill review ratings so 2 of the 4 visible New Arrivals cards do not sit blank next to neighbors showing stars
Red Chief — Mobile
Red Chief — Mobile
Bacca Bucci — Mobile
Bacca Bucci — Mobile
Observations
  • On the same New Arrivals grid, the Dark Grey and Navy RC Sports cards show '5 (1)' and '4.5 (2)' star ratings, while the Taupe and Brown cards immediately next to them show no rating or review count at all.
  • This isn't a missing feature (CP-04's probe confirms the theme's product card template supports ratings), it's inconsistent Judge.me review coverage across SKUs, so shoppers see credibility signals on some tiles and a blank gap on others in the same row.
  • A blank card next to a rated one reads as 'no one has bought this yet' even when the real reason is simply that no review request has gone out for that SKU.
Recommendations
  • Trigger Judge.me review-request emails/SMS for every completed order regardless of SKU, and check coverage across the catalog rather than a handful of hero products.
  • For new SKUs with zero reviews, consider suppressing the rating slot on the card entirely (rather than a visible gap) until a first review lands, so the grid doesn't read as inconsistent.
Opportunity — even review-coverage builds trust across the whole grid, not just hero SKUs
Add a sticky Sort and Filter bar to collection pages so shoppers deep in the 47-product New Arrivals grid can refine without scrolling back to the top
Red Chief — Mobile
Red Chief — Mobile
Neemans — Mobile
Neemans — Mobile
Observations
  • On the New Arrivals grid the 'Filter and Sort' control sits once, near the top of the page, and scrolls away with the content — deep in the grid (as in this frame) no Sort or Filter button is on screen, only a back-to-top arrow.
  • The New Arrivals collection holds 47 products, so a shopper who has scrolled through several rows and wants to narrow by size, price or sort order has to scroll all the way back up first.
  • The header stays pinned on scroll, but it carries only search, account, wishlist and cart — nothing for refining the product list.
Recommendations
  • Pin a compact 'Sort by | Filter' bar to the bottom of the mobile collection screen (or float a Filter button) so refinement is always one tap away; this keeps shoppers browsing and moves them toward relevant products faster.
  • Neemans already keeps a fixed Sort by / Filter bar on its mobile collection pages, so shoppers of comparable footwear stores expect this behaviour.
Opportunity — keeps refinement one tap away on long footwear grids
Add a Buy Now button next to Add to Cart so buyers of this Rs. 2,295 slipper can skip the cart page entirely
Red Chief — Mobile
Red Chief — Mobile
Neemans — Mobile
Neemans — Mobile
Observations
  • The purchase panel on this PDP has a quantity stepper and a single full-width 'Add to cart' button — no separate 'Buy Now' action.
  • Every purchase, decisive or not, is routed through the native /cart page before checkout, adding a screen for shoppers who already know what they want.
  • This is a one-time decision-stage product (footwear), where a chunk of visitors are repeat or referred buyers most likely to want a direct route to checkout.
Recommendations
  • Add a secondary 'Buy Now' button under Add to Cart that adds the item and routes straight to /checkout, bypassing the cart page.
  • Keep 'Add to Cart' as the primary CTA so shoppers who want to keep browsing are not pushed into checkout by mistake.
Opportunity — a direct-to-checkout path reduces steps for decisive buyers
Seed reviews before launch so shoppers do not land on a 0-review page like this Rs. 2,295 slipper with 8 product photos
Red Chief — Mobile
Red Chief — Mobile
Neemans — Mobile
Neemans — Mobile
Observations
  • This PDP's 'Customer Reviews' section shows five unfilled star outlines and 'Be the first to write a review' — zero ratings, zero review count, zero individual reviews.
  • Judge.me is clearly active on the account: this same page's own 'Similar Products' row shows sibling Red Chief SKUs carrying 4.70 (86), 4.63 (46) and 4.87 (71) ratings, and HP-04 confirms the widget renders on the homepage too.
  • The gap is coverage, not capability — the review app works on this template, but this product has no reviews to show a shopper comparing options.
Recommendations
  • Audit review coverage across the full catalog (not just bestsellers) and prioritize review-request sends for zero-review, in-stock SKUs.
  • Consider an initial review-seeding pass (verified buyer imports or a launch review campaign) for new SKUs so they don't sit at zero indefinitely.
Opportunity — closes a social-proof gap Judge.me is already paid for
Add payment and security badges near the Checkout button, which currently carries 0 trust indicators at the final step
Red Chief — Mobile
Red Chief — Mobile
Bacca Bucci — Mobile
Bacca Bucci — Mobile
Observations
  • The native /cart page shows the line item, a Platform Fee note and the black 'Checkout' button with the order total — no lock icon, payment-method logos, or 'secure checkout' text sit within reach of that button.
  • The only reassurance copy on the page ('Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.') is about cost, not security.
  • This is the last screen before a shopper hands over payment details, and it is also the page most likely to be visited by a first-time buyer who has never transacted with the brand before.
Recommendations
  • Add a row of payment-method icons (UPI, cards, net banking) directly under the Checkout button, mirroring what is already shown on the PDP's COD/returns strip.
  • Add a one-line 'Secure Checkout' badge with a lock icon so the trust signal is visible in the same viewport as the CTA, not just on the PDP.
Opportunity — reassures first-time buyers at the highest-friction step
Add Shop Pay, UPI or Google Pay express buttons beside the 1 standard Checkout option to speed up repeat purchases
✗
Feature not present
Red Chief — Not Present
Proposed Implementation — Red Chief Mobile Cart
Proposed Implementation — Red Chief Mobile Cart
Observations
  • The only path to purchase on /cart is the single black 'Checkout' button, which was confirmed by clicking it to lead into a standard, non-accelerated Shopify checkout form asking for email, name, and full address.
  • No Shop Pay, Google Pay, or UPI-intent express button appears above or beside the Checkout button, on the cart page or at the start of checkout itself.
  • Redchief already supports UPI at checkout (visible once the address form loads), so the capability exists — it just isn't surfaced as a one-tap shortcut before the full form.
  • Tested with a single Red Chief Comfortable Leather Slipper (RC331 001, Black, Size 6) at Rs. 2,295.00: the cart offers only one route forward — the standard 'Checkout • Rs. 2,295.00' button.
Recommendations
  • Enable Shopify's Shop Pay and any UPI-intent express-checkout buttons so they render above the Checkout button on /cart for shoppers with saved details.
  • Test that the express buttons appear identically in the cart's mobile viewport, since this template renders at 390px and express buttons are often clipped on narrow themes.
Differentiator — 1/10 fashion stores show express checkout before standard checkout
Add a visible coupon field in cart so shoppers holding the WELCOME200 code advertised sitewide can redeem it before checkout
Red Chief — Mobile
Red Chief — Mobile
Proposed Implementation — Red Chief Mobile Cart
Proposed Implementation — Red Chief Mobile Cart
Observations
  • The cart page's rewards module shows a 'Discount code' line reading Rs. 0.00 inside a read-only summary (CART VALUE / Discount code / Loyalty discount / Total Discounts) — there is no typeable input anywhere on the page to actually enter a code.
  • The site's own announcement bar advertises 'Sign up & Avail Flat 200 off - USE CODE - WELCOME200' — but the cart gives shoppers holding that code nowhere to apply it.
  • A DOM scan of every visible input on /cart confirms only search, quantity, guest-email and newsletter fields exist; none accepts a promo code.
  • Tested with a single Red Chief Comfortable Leather Slipper (RC331 001, Black, Size 6) at Rs. 2,295.00: nothing between the line item and 'Checkout • Rs. 2,295.00' lets the shopper type a code.
Recommendations
  • Add a 'Have a coupon?' collapsed field (per the site's own conditional-visibility pattern used elsewhere) that expands into a code input and apply button.
  • Auto-suggest the WELCOME200 code inline for first-time carts, since it is already the headline offer in the announcement bar.
Opportunity — lets shoppers redeem the site's own advertised offer
Add a spend-more-save-more progress bar to the cart so a shopper with 1 item sees the next reward instead of a bare Checkout button
Red Chief — Mobile
Red Chief — Mobile
Bacca Bucci — Mobile
Bacca Bucci — Mobile
Observations
  • The /cart page with a Rs. 2,295 slipper shows the line item, a Platform Fee line and the Checkout button — no progress bar, tier ladder or 'add more to unlock' message anywhere in view.
  • The only offer messaging is the sitewide announcement bar ('Sign up & Avail Flat 200 off - USE CODE - WELCOME200'), which the cart never references or tracks progress toward.
  • Shoppers therefore get no reason to add a belt, socks or shoe-care item to a single-pair cart, in a category where accessories are the natural add-on.
  • This is an incentive-tier bar (spend more, save more), not a free-shipping bar; free shipping already applies to every order.
Recommendations
  • Add a slim progress bar at the top of the cart with two or three reward steps (for example a flat discount that grows with cart value) and live copy such as 'Add Rs. X more to unlock your reward'; this lifts basket size by giving each cart a visible next goal.
  • Bacca Bucci already shows a tiered savings ladder at the top of its cart, and Neemans runs an item-count discount bar in its cart, so this is a familiar pattern for footwear shoppers.
Opportunity — gives every cart a visible next reward to raise basket size

App Ecosystem

What's installed vs what's missing from best-in-class Fashion & Apparel stores

3 Critical Categories
Missing
Top Indian fashion/footwear D2C stores in the benchmark set typically run 8-12 purpose-built apps across reviews, email/SMS, loyalty, chat and checkout optimisation. Red Chief's stack covers most of these categories already (reviews, email, wishlist, chat, loyalty) — the gaps are narrower and configuration-level: express checkout is not enabled, no BNPL/EMI provider is surfaced, and the loyalty app's own coupon feature isn't exposed to shoppers.

Heavy footprint sitewide (.jdgm-widget matched 22x on homepage, 10x on this PDP) and renders strong ratings on several SKUs (4.70/86, 4.87/71), but coverage is inconsistent — the audited PDP and 2 of 4 visible New Arrivals cards show zero reviews.

OptCulture is already installed for loyalty — a visible coupon field is a configuration gap, not a new-app purchase

App Stack Assessment

Red Chief's app stack is more complete than most first-look audits find: Judge.me, Klaviyo, Wati WhatsApp, Advanced Wishlist and OptCulture loyalty are all live, and the two checkout-overlay risks flagged in pre-audit research (GoKwik, Shopflo) both check out clean — GoKwik is confirmed login-only and Shopflo is confirmed disabled, so checkout is native Shopify. The remaining opportunity is less about adding new apps and more about finishing the configuration of what's already paid for: turning on express checkout, exposing OptCulture's coupon field to shoppers, and closing the review-coverage gap on newer SKUs.
